When it comes to packaging, shape retention is a key element of brand identity and consumer innovation. Glass is highly customizable and can maintain the shape it was formed into. The "cold feel" of a glass container is a feature beverage brand owners use to please consumers when they choose a refrigerated bottle.

 

Plastics
Did you know that the role of the expiration date on a plastic bottle is to ensure that the product meets the brand's requirements for taste and consistency? While the shelf life of a plastic bottle is long, it is shorter than that of a glass or metal container of the same size. However, improved processing techniques and barrier enhancements coupled with fast turnover rates have made the shelf life of the packaging sufficient for many applications.

 

Plastic beverage bottles are easy to form. For pressurized products such as soft drinks, packaging faces the challenge of maintaining the same shape under high internal pressure. But through innovation, processing techniques and material improvements, plastics can be formed into almost any shape even when pressurized.

 

Plastic bottles are very clear, lightweight, refillable, and have a high safety factor even if they are dropped. For plastics, recycling collection can be a limiting factor, but technology is improving to make plastics more recyclable.

 

Metal
Metal cans have unique properties when used for beverages. Metal ranks high in weight, recyclability, and safety. Unique shape retention and clarity are not among its strengths. New processing techniques allow cans to be formed, but these are costly and limited to smaller market applications.

 

Metal blocks light, retains CO2, and resists oxygen intrusion, giving your beverages a long shelf life. When it comes to keeping cold temperatures for consumers, metal cans are often the first choice.
